Pirates make a miraculous comeback victory

The Lady Pirates softball squad squared off in a very high scoring match against the Pecatonica Indians on April 5. The game had an incredible turn of events and by the end of the first inning it seemed all but over in the first inning.

The Indians came out on fire and scored eight runs in the first inning. The Pirates however were unable to put a single run on the board. By the end of the third inning the Indians had increased their lead to a staggering 14-2.

“We were down by so many that we were unsure if we could even come back. We have been beaten by a lot before, and at the early stages of the game it felt like another blow out, but we started to get hits and gain momentum and before we knew it we had the lead.” Said pitcher Corina Noble ‘21.

Anyone who heard a score of 14-2 would have thought the deficit was too much for the Pirates to even make it close. The Pirates however didn’t get the memo and they went on to outscore the Indians 14-1 in the next two innings.

Thanks to some angry encouragement by coach Dusty Berning the team decide to wake up and play softball. The Pirates had not only closed a 12 run deficit, but they were able to take a 16-15 lead heading into the sixth inning.

The Pirates closed out the final two innings giving up only one more run. The final score of the whirlwind game was 19-16 and the Pirates claimed their first win of the season.

“It was great to get our first win, and it was crazy the way that it happened. I feel like this win will set us on the path for many wins to come,” said Samantha Stoffregen ‘19.

The Pirates will face West Carroll for their next game on Wednesday, April 10.
