Pirates take down Warriors
On Friday, October 22, the GHS football team played East Dubuque in their last game of the regular season. Going in with a record of 4-4, they needed to win this game to be able to advance to the playoffs
The Pirates started off strong with junior Sam Eaton running 47 yards for the first touchdown of the game.
Eaton had a great game with a total of 170 yards and two touchdowns making him the Pirate Competitor of the Week. “We came out strong, which is something we haven’t been able to do in every game this year,” explained Eaton. “We were able to carry that momentum through the rest of the game.”
The next points of the game were scored by quarterback Ethan Hefel ‘22 from the three-yard line and Jarrett Basten ‘22 catching a pass for a 34-yard touchdown.
Senior Brady Schemehorn caught a 46-yard pass for a touchdown making the score 28-6.
With about one minute left before halftime, the Pirates saw a big play as Hefel intercepted the ball. After he ran the ball for another touchdown, the score was 35-6 going into halftime.
Coming out of the locker room the team continued their quest for the playoffs. Eaton ran for 65-yards and scored a touchdown to start the second half.
Sophomore Jack Ries followed with a 41-yard run making the score 49-6.
After a touchdown by East Dubuque, the final score was 49-14 resulting in a Galena Pirate victory.
With this win, the Pirates are off to the playoffs for the first time since 2015. “Getting into the playoffs is a big deal for us,” said Hefel. GHS is excited to see what our football boys can accomplish.
