Pirate Competitor of the Week (April 4):
8th grade Quiz Bowl member Everett Noble is this week’s Pirate Competitor of the Week sponsored by Galena Culver’s and the Galena Gazette.  At last week’s meet at Scales Mound, Everett snagged 7 toss-ups and 17 bonuses to lead the Galena-1 squad to victories over East Dubuque and Scales Mound.  Galena-1 finished their season with a 4-4 record.  According to coach Ashley Hoppenjan, “Everett has brought energy like no one else during each practice and meet this season.” Everett was honored with a gift basket from the Galena Culver’s, as well as a newspaper courtesy of the Galena Gazette.
Also Nominated:
Sophomore Emma Furlong had 3 hits, including a double, and 3 RBIs in Galena’s 16-0 win over Benton/Shullsburg on Friday.  On the season, Emma is leading the team in batting with an .875 average and is tied for first on the team with 7 hits.  She also has not struck-out this season and has been on base 13 out of 14 times.  Coach Dusty Berning praised her play, stating “Emma has played an integral part in our 3-0 start this season.  She’s almost automatic when it comes to getting on base.  Her work ethic both at practice and outside of practice is the reason for her success this season.”
Senior baseball player Ethan Hefel has had 2 strong performances on the mound so far this season. This past Friday, Ethan shutout out a good Southwestern team, holding them to 2 hits and struck out 18 batters (career and team high). Coach Jared Berlage commented, “I told the team the day before that we would have multiple pitchers throw in Friday’s game and players would be on limited pitch count. As the game started and got to the 4th inning, Ethan was coming to his pitch limit and I decided to keep him in to go after the win.  Hefel battled to complete the game and received some help from the offense to score runs.  Ethan is a gamer and wants to win, he is the only senior and does a great job leading by example. We’ve started off with a 3-0 record and I am excited to see him leading his team and what they will do this season.”

Junior soccer player Maia Kropp had a great game in Thursday’s 2-1 victory over Rockford Christian Life.  Coach Jorden Rijpma stated, “Maia scored 2 goals in the first half by putting a ton of pressure on the opponent’s defense. As a captain of the team, Maia always works hard and encourages her teammates with positive feedback.”
