Pirate Competitor of the Week – October 3, 2022

Ayden Wells is our Pirate Competitor of the week. Ayden placed 4th in the IHSA Girls Golf Regional this past Thursday at Atwood Homestead Golf Course in Rockford, Illinois shooting a 86. She has been Medalist in over half the girls meets during the regular season helping lead the girls team to a 8-3 conference record and a  9-4 overall record. Coach Hulscher said, “Ayden played very well at the Regional Tournament shooting an 86. She has shown steady improvement throughout the year. Good luck to her as she competes in the Sectional Tournament on Monday.” Ayden will compete in the Sectional Tournament at Baker Park Golf Course in Kewanee, Illinois on Monday.

Ayden was honored with a gift basket from the Galena Culver’s, as well as a newspaper courtesy of the Galena Gazette.

Layla Cagney-7th Grade Volleyball – Coach Rigopoulos said, “Layla has made vast improvements throughout the season in her position as a middle hitter. She is strong at the net and leads our team in kills and blocks. She works well under pressure and does a great job maintaining control of the ball. Layla is always receptive to feedback and works hard to be a better player and teammate.” Layla had 6 kills and 3 blocks in wins over Potosi and River Ridge last week.

Myles Schumacher-JV Football – Myles ran for 5 touchdowns this week in a hard fought loss in double overtime to Forreston. Myles had touchdown runs of 10, 65, 40, 9, and 2 yards. He also had a fumble recovery.  Coach Decker commented, “Myles continues to get better each week.  This week we challenged our players to set the tone and be more physical than our opponent, and Myles clearly ran with that in mind.”

Eli Studtmann-7th Grade Football – 7th grade football player Eli Studtmann had a big game this past Tuesday in a 24-14 win over EPC.  From his fullback position, Eli had 7 carries for 82 yards and 2 touchdowns for an average of just under 12 yards a carry.  Coach Sincock added, “He also had a couple nice pancake blocks while leading blocking on a couple other long runs.  Eli has pulled double duty this year helping out the 8th grade team at linebacker and fullback also.  He has really improved his running and blocking this year and has done a really nice job the last two games breaking tackles and driving on blocks.  He plays an important position in our offense and helped create a lot of big plays in the running game against EPC.”

Olivia Hillard – 8th Grade Volleyball – Olivia played a large role in both of the wins against River Ridge and Warren last week. Overall, Olivia had 3 aces, 1 kill, and 10 assists. Coach Stumpf said, “As a setter, Olivia has a very important job on the court. She’s smart with the ball and has no problem making quick decisions during play. Her setting skills have improved over the course of this year and I’m excited to see where it takes her in the years to come.”

Galena Varsity Offensive Line-Varsity Football – Galena Varsity Football team had a big win over Eastland Pearl-City Friday night 28-13 to even their record at 3-3. The offensive line led the way for the rushing attack as the Pirates had 289 yards on 51 carries. Members of the offensive line include Kolby Knautz, Keaton Bauer, Cooper Einsweiler, Nick Handfelt, Will Anderson, Ashton Sproule, and Josh McNett. Coach Freed commented, “We started the season with no returning starters upfront for us and this group has really worked hard to improve each week and are really coming together as we battle for a playoff spot these last three weeks. Friday night we had great ball control and some big holes thanks to these guys upfront.”
