Pirate Competitor of the Week – Joey Heller Varsity Boys Basketball

Last week in 3 games Joey averaged 5 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 1 steal a game helping Galena go 3-0 for the week. Coach Wienen commented, “Joey’s play these last couple of weeks has been a big part of helping reel off some big wins for our program. We ask Joey to guard one of the other team’s best players almost every game. He is a very versatile player for us on both ends of the floor.  He can rebound, drive to the rim and shoot from the outside, unrated passer. Joey does everything we ask him to do to the best of his ability day in- day out.  He works/plays so hard to help our team win.  He is a great team player! He’s the first one to help a teammate up when they hit the floor. You can tell how he plays, the only thing he cares about is winning!”

Joey was honored with a gift basket from Galena Culver’s, as well as a newspaper courtesy of the Galena Gazette.

Also Nominated

Julia Townsend Varsity Girls Basketball – Coach Watson said, “It was a long week of basketball with 6 games in 7 days and Julia made the most of her opportunities.  Julia works extremely hard on the defensive end of the floor and her hard work showed up this week.  Julia’s defensive effort vs Rockford Harlem resulted in a team leading 5 steals.  She also hit a huge 3 pointer late in the game that sealed the victory.  Julia is a smart player and combined with a great work ethic, she has given us a big spark this season.”
