Galena High School provides a few options for breakfast that students can choose from in the cafeteria before school starts. Breakfast options include Banana Nut Muffins, Chocolate Chip Muffins, Banana Bread, Raspberry Filled Donuts, and Cream Filled Donuts. The lunch staff like to switch it up every morning so students have more options for breakfast and not switching it up can get boring. GHS Principal Mrs. Hawkins said, “At GHS there are a lot of la carte options for breakfast that students can purchase. Unlike GEMS or during covid the high school does not have a breakfast program. This means we as a school are choosing to offer food for sale to help students who are hungry in the morning. This is why it is not a full meal like at GEMS and also why free/reduced lunch recipients do not have that for breakfast. Students are also allowed to eat in the cafeteria or be in hallways prior to class with food.” School Breakfast costs .50 for students and it gets deducted from their lunch account.
Senior Molly Beadle said, “Nothing beats a good chocolate chip muffin; I’m happy with it.” Regarding adding anything, Molly said, “If we added anything, let it be yogurt.” Having more options for school breakfast will make it less boring for students when they want or need breakfast in the morning. School breakfast is used for students who wake up late and need a quick and easy breakfast or some students who may need a second breakfast.
Although there are a lot of options, there are still some things that can be added. “I can’t eat anything from the cafeteria because they don’t have any gluten-free options,” said Cameron Einsweiler ‘26 “I can’t eat it because they don’t have any gluten-free options.” For adding anything Cameron said, “I think they should add stuff but I don’t know what.” Galena High School lunch staff were interviewed about not having gluten-free options. “There is a very minimal selection of choices for gluten-free so we choose not to get them because it can be a waste in some ways,” said GHS lunch lady Lynn Richardson. Gluten-Free can only come in cases of 24-30 items per case which can be a waste with only a few gluten-free students. “If there are only a few students that are gluten-free and you get a case of gluten-free breakfast items it can expire and be a waste of time and money,” said GHS lunch lady Rose Casper.
Even though there are a lot of quick and easy options like muffins and banana bread, they could serve some hot breakfast items for students. “It is okay. Eggs and Bacon should be added,” said Peter Wagner ‘27. Adding Eggs and Bacon would mean the lunch ladies would possibly have to get to school earlier to cook enough eggs and bacon for students on a first-come first-serve basis. Serving eggs and bacon is a healthier option and teachers could even get a good breakfast if they don’t have time to eat before coming into school.
Class of 2028 student Calli Sexton said, “It is good, I like it. The mini waffles should be added.” Galena High School used to serve the mini waffles but they were losing popularity so they stopped serving them and started serving items they thought the students would enjoy more.
