As the second semester kicks off, Galena High School has had the privilege of welcoming some new students: Isabella Haugh ‘28 and Kane Trujillo ‘27. GHS has always welcomed new students by introducing them to teachers, making new friends, and taking tours with classmates. This year, one of our students comes from a nearby town, while the other comes from an agricultural high school!
The new addition to the freshman class is Haugh ‘28. Before GHS, she attended Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences, which is much larger and includes access to a farm for agricultural classes. “Everyone was forced to get out of their comfort zones and become friends; it was like a huge family,” said Haugh ‘28. The transition from a city like Chicago to a small town like Galena was tough at first. However, she likes Galena and appreciates how quiet it can be. “It’s nice not to be around a lot of commotion,” Haugh said.
Although the transition has been difficult, Haugh has come to enjoy life in Galena. At her old school, grades couldn’t mix, which meant freshmen weren’t in the same classes as upperclassmen. “I love how social I get to be with other people, instead of just talking to people in my own grade,” Haugh said.
At her previous school, students had all of their classes in one day, which she preferred over GHS’s schedule. GHS operates on an A, B, and C day rotation, which doesn’t allow her to stay on top of her lessons as easily. However, she finds that homeroom helps her manage her workload so that when she gets home, she can relax.
The new addition to the sophomore class is Trujillo ’27. He comes from East Dubuque High School. GHS is hoping to make him feel welcome and is working to get to know him better!
Haugh adds, “Be kind and inclusive because being a new student isn’t easy for everyone. When people see someone making an effort, it definitely has a positive impact on their experience at a new school.” Even though moving has its challenges, Haugh has found ways to focus on the positives. GHS is committed to ensuring that our school remains a safe and welcoming place for new students.
