While GHS is under construction, many students and teachers have had to move their parking. Unfortunately, because the upper lot is closed, many people must fight for parking. Students and teachers have to share parking in the lower lot because there are not enough parking spaces, so some students have to park at the old primary school.
Many students are not happy with the parking problem because people who normally park in the upper lot have come and stolen classmates’ spots in the lower lot. Many people wished that the parking situation would have been handled differently. “I think that they should have organized it better. They should have allowed people to pay for a parking spot so it wouldn’t be as chaotic in the mornings,” said Evelyn Callahan ‘25. The idea of paying for parking was brought up to Hawlkins but because there was no real way to police it, the idea was turned down.
Many teachers are also affected by the parking dilemma. “The parking situation has also affected me because I used to park in the lower lot, but I decided to move so that students can have closer parking to the school. I always try to help students and make the best out of what we have to deal with,” said Mrs.Deppe.
Some students have tried to look at the bright side. “I don’t have a problem with the parking situation because it’s not that far of a walk from the old primary school and I have a track after school so I can just move my car,” said Ell Law ‘27. Many students don’t mind the walk up to the high school because it gives them a chance to catch up with friends before the school day. “At the moment, the parking situation is not the most enjoyable. Having to walk to school in the rain and snow this past week has not been ideal, but waking up with my gang makes it more fun. I think the walk will get better as the weather gets nicer,” said Lydia Connor ‘27
As for now, the parking situation will stay the same. In the future, many students and teachers hope it will improve. Even though it is aggravating, people need to look at the bigger picture and realize that parking is only temporary and is the safest option. Mrs. Hawkins tries her best to reassure students that it will get better, she said, “The biggest thing to remind students is to think of the bigger picture and the benefits that will come out of the construction. We have counted the parking spots to ensure every student will have a spot even if it is not ideal. We just want to make sure that students have a safe place to park during all the construction.”
