In an era where cultural exchange is more important than ever, the American Exchange Project offers students a unique opportunity to connect with peers from around the world and see what the world has to offer outside of their small towns. This year, GHS has luckily been able to start this for their students. In total, there are 10 seniors who are signed up to go to a random town in America. This program allows students to engage with different cultures, build international friendships, and develop global perspectives—opening doors to new educational and personal growth opportunities for them.
This project was created by David McCullough III, who had a passion for seeing what else the world had in store for people. The project’s main goal is to focus on spreading culture and giving kids different experiences with new people. When asked about what drew them to this project, Cael Ozee ‘25 said, “What drew me to this was the idea that not only are you going somewhere that starkly contrasts with what you’re familiar with, but that you are also free of having to pay any exorbitant travel fees or expenses.” The project is completely free thanks to all of their donors across the world.
However, just because the project is free doesn’t mean you are necessarily given what you want. Sarah Bello ‘25 said, “I really wanted to go to Palo Alto, California. I had posted about it for a week before I found out my destination,” although the project looks at preferences, you are never guaranteed the place you want, “While I was a little disappointed, I am very very excited for this amazing opportunity.”
All of the seniors who are taking part in this project recommend it to incoming seniors, and so do teachers. Adison Leitzinger ‘25 said, “I would 100% recommend this program to everybody. It’s such an exciting thing to look forward to after you graduate!” Each senior has only had nice things to say about this upcoming experience, as well as about how excited they are. Ozee ‘25 said, “The result of this trip is likely to be a trip that you’ll undoubtedly enjoy.”
