Susan Bookless, Galena High School English teacher, has been selected by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) to receive the Award of Special Recognition in the Classroom Teacher category.
Bookless is the only teacher from Jo Daviess County to be recognized this year, highlighting her exceptional commitment to her students and the local community.
Bookless will be presented with her award certificate and celebrated alongside 450 other outstanding educators at the 52nd Annual “Those Who Excel” & Teacher of the Year Awards Banquet. The ceremony will take place on Saturday, April 18, 2026, at the Bloomington-Normal Marriott Hotel and Conference Center.
The “Those Who Excel” program honors individuals who have made significant contributions to Illinois’ public and nonpublic elementary and secondary schools. Applications are rigorously scored by a review committee comprising ISBE staff, representatives from education organizations, and current and past awardees.
The Award of Special Recognition is one of three levels of honor bestowed by the state. Educators selected for this tier are recognized as vital members of their school community who have been lauded by colleagues, students, families, and administrators for the unique skills, passions, and talents they bring to the classroom.
