Christmastime comes early

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, but it’s not Christmas time yet, or is it? Since Halloween ended, Wal-Mart has had a big Christmas countdown sign which is noticeable as  you walk through the door. People are putting up their Christmas trees, playing Christmas music, and already counting down the days. But, are we rushing into Christmas?

It’s only November, but it appears the world is already well-prepared for the Christmas season. At GHS, there are few Thanksgiving festivities and already many activities planned for Christmas. The Art Club has already decorated wreaths and made ornaments, and signs advertising Servant Leadership’s Christmas Sweater Day and Student Council’s Winter Formal are emblazoned in the GHS hallways. Aside from Fall Frolic, there are few festivities to celebrate Thanksgiving and fall.

The fall season has virtually been skipped over and the winter season is already highly anticipated. Despite the fact that there has been no snowfall yet this holiday season to decorate the ground, families have brought out their Christmas decorations regardless. “My grandparents put up their Christmas tree the week after Halloween. It is kind of crazy,” said Hannah Wubben, junior .

As Christmas grows nearer, we will soon hear the classic Christmas songs on the radio and ringing throughout the streets. Some people who cannot wait until December have already begun to listen to Christmas music. “I love Christmas music! I’d listen to it year-round, but that wouldn’t be socially acceptable. Once Halloween is over, I start listening to it more freely,” said Sophia Heisler, sophomore.

But, there are many people have strong feelings for Thanksgiving. “Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. I like it even more than Christmas just because of all the food and good company,” said Lisi Ludwig, junior. The centerpiece of Thanksgiving is family and being thankful, which makes it such a meaningful holiday for so many people.

We rush from Halloween straight to Christmas, and a vital holiday is forgotten in the process. Christmas is celebrated the entire month of December, and Thanksgiving gets little celebration in comparison. Thanksgiving deserves its turn!
