Journalism heads to State

The Galena High School Journalism team competed at IHSA Sectionals on Saturday, April 13. The Sectional competition took place at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. Thirteen students competed in the event among the different categories.

Corrina Noble placed 6th place in Infographics. Judas Benson ‘21 and Marion Schultz ‘19 placed 5th in Yearbook Theme Development. Also placing 5th was Henry Anderson ‘20 in Headline Writing. Sawyer Quick ‘19 also placed 5th place in Newspaper Design. Jovian Pham ‘22 placed 4th place in Advertising. Also in 4th place was Shea Curran ’19 in Yearbook Captions and Sawyer Quick in Yearbook Layout. “I was really nervous because I have never been in newspaper before, but I am happy with how I placed,” said Curran.

The top 3 places in each category advance to the State Tournament. By default, Curran will get to move due to another person unable to compete. She will take their place and be proud to represent GHS at the state tournament. Junior, Sophia Getz, placed 2nd place in Editorial Writing.”I wasn’t even supposed to participate in this event and this is the one I placed in” said Getz ‘20. The sectional champion for Feature Writing was, sophomore, Maggie Handfelt.

Getz, Handfelt, and Curran will all compete in the IHSA State Journalism Tournament on Friday, April 26 at Heartland Community College in Normal, Illinois.
