Junior Sami Wasmund takes the ball up the court against the East Dubuque Warriors. The Pirates won with a score of 53-43. Wasmund said, “It was great to get another win under our belt especially with the postseason right around the corner!”

The Galena Pirates Girls Basketball team took on their rivals, the East Dubuque Warriors, on Friday, January 25, and the Pirates came out on top. The final score of the game was 53-43.

Both teams were neck and neck for the majority of the game. At the end of the first and second quarter, the Pirates only had a two point lead against the Warriors. By the end of the third quarter, the Pirates were ahead by four points. The Pirates and Warriors brought their A game and were not going to back down.

“We went into the game knowing that we wanted to beat the East Dubuque Warriors the second time around,” said sophomore Corrina Noble. “We knew that they were going to be better, but so were we. In the end, it came down to who wanted it more.”

The Warriors continued to hang with the Pirates for the rest of the fourth quarter, but were always a couple points behind. The Pirates were in-sync which caused the Warriors to lose their momentum a little bit near the end. The Pirates played hard throughout and it payed off.

“We knew that we would have to fight for every point,” said junior Gracie Wubben. “We played strong offense and even stronger defense. We kept them out of the lane and they weren’t able to beat us from the outside.”

The Pirates are doing very well this season. Their overall record is 17-7 and their conference record is 5-4. The Pirates will next face the Stockton Blackhawks on Friday, Feb. 1
