Christmas with the Key Club
Galena High School’s Key Club has brought the holiday spirit to Galena this month with their festive volunteer opportunities. On December 12, members got together to help set up candles for the annual Luminaria. Each year, more than 5,000 luminaries line the streets. This year, the Key Club was responsible for setting up and lighting candles along Park Avenue and up to Grant’s Home. Maia Kropp ‘23 said, “I feel like Luminaria really brings the community together! Knowing that I was a part of this beautiful event was very exciting.”
On December 17, the club met once again to go shopping for gifts for less fortunate families in our community. The volunteers went to Walmart to shop for the needed items and returned to school to wrap the presents. They are being delivered shortly. Maggie Handfelt ‘21, the president of the club, was present at this event and thoroughly enjoyed it. “I think helping out the community is a great reminder of the power everybody has to make a difference, even when things feel off in our personal lives,” she explains. “It’s a great way to reflect on how lucky we truly are, even when we might not feel like it.”
Although this holiday season may look a little different for families in our community, the Key Club has done a wonderful job of keeping the Christmas spirit alive. From helping out the less fortunate to decorating the town, they have
