As spring blooms, the soccer season is officially underway. Players are back on the field, practicing and preparing for upcoming games. This season is especially important because it marks the second year under the team’s current head coach, who continues building the program and helping the team grow.
Last season gave the coach a chance to get to know the players and begin developing the team’s style of play. Now entering year two, both the coach and players are looking to build off what they started last season and continue improving. Coach Spencer Pyle said, “Entering my second year, I’ve set high expectations for both the team and myself. Last season gave me valuable insight into our skill level and the development strategies needed to build a stronger, more competitive program. The players have also become more familiar with my coaching style and expectations. I believe there are many winnable games on our schedule this season, but it’s up to us to stay disciplined, trust our preparation, and go out and earn those opportunities.”
Early practices have been focused on conditioning, passing, communication, and strengthening team chemistry. These first few weeks help players adjust back into the pace of the game and prepare for competition. Senior Violet Doyle shared, “Practice has been really good this year. Everyone shows up with a good attitude and a willingness to get better every day. To prepare for the season, we have been doing a lot of game-like drills and scrimmaging to really get the team ready for our first game day.”
Another unique part of the team’s season is that although the school is located in Illinois, many of the games are played across the state line in Wisconsin. Representing the school in another state instills a sense of pride and responsibility, while also gaining team chemistry through shared experiences and travel. Coach Luis explained, “It’s definitely a unique situation, but in a good way. It kind of adds a sense of pride knowing we’re carrying our school’s name into another state, so we want to represent it the right way. It also helps build team chemistry since we’re traveling more and spending extra time together.”
Players are also setting personal and team goals for the season. With a new year comes new opportunities to grow, improve skills, and strengthen their connection as a team. Clea Vantrimpot said she had some goals for this year’s season: “Being able to be a close-knit team that progresses and gives everything they have to go beyond their limits while respecting each other and having fun.”
As the games approach, excitement continues to grow among the players, coaches, and fans. With strong leadership from the coaching staff and determination from the players, the team hopes to make this season a successful one. With practices in the works and games right around the corner, the team is ready to take the field and see what they can accomplish together this season.
