On Friday, May 1, the Galena Pirates varsity softball team secured a hard-fought 2-0 victory over East Dubuque, fueled by a dominant performance in the circle and timely power at the plate.
Kenzie Harris ’29 was the star of the night, pitching a complete-game shutout. Over seven innings, she allowed just two hits and three walks while striking out seven batters to earn the win. Harris was efficient throughout the contest, throwing 61 of her 110 pitches for strikes.
The Pirates’ offense provided just enough support to secure the win, with both runs coming via the long ball: Chloe Kaiser ’29 broke the stalemate in the third inning with a solo home run.
Avery Werner added a critical insurance run in the sixth inning with a solo shot of her own.
The game was a true pitcher’s duel, as East Dubuque’s Oberman also put in a stellar performance, striking out 13 Pirates over seven innings of work. However, the two solo home runs proved to be the difference as Galena’s defense remained flawless to preserve the shutout.
