The five seniors and their families take a group photo and reflect on the bittersweet moments during senior night. Sydney Einsweiler ‘22 said, “It has always been a super fun experience to play with my friends these past 4 years and I am glad everyone was able to play together one last time at home.”

On Friday, February 4, the varsity girls basketball team played Warren at GHS. It was Senior Night and also the girls final home game of the season. This year there were five outstanding seniors who have shown their dedication and love of their sport every time they stepped onto the court. The seniors were Hannah Lacey, Avery Engle, Sydney Einsweiler, Claire Martensen and Maggie Furlong. The girls ran out on the court during warm ups to the song “Now or Never” from High School Musical 3: Senior Year in honor of their last home game.

Going into the game, Galena had an overall record of 23-3 and a record of 8-0 in conference. Galena pushed past Warren with a final score of 61-11. Maggie Furlong ‘22 led the team with 16 points. “The atmosphere on senior night was amazing and sharing the night with the little girls made it even more special. Being able to share moments like that with your teammates and family reminds us all why we love the sport so much. We are all very grateful for the opportunities we’ve been given by this team,” said Furlong.

“It was cool having senior night on our last home game because it was like our final hurrah of a fun season,” said Claire Martensen ‘22. The majority of these seniors have been playing together since primary school and saying goodbye to basketball would be really tough.

Also during halftime of the game, primary school aged girls displayed their growing basketball skills. Coach Anna Hushcler led them in basketball drills while the girls followed her lead.

The team is looking forward to regionals next week and hoping to end their successful season on a good note. Regionals start on Monday, February 14, and will be played at Eastland High School.
