Varsity girls gobble up the opposition

Girls basketball team takes the Warren Turkey Tournament

As the reigning Turkey Tournament champions for three years now, the Lady Pirates were determined to receive another plaque for the fourth year in a row. Katie Furlong said, “Our goal is to make it a 4-peat and to also be 21-0 at Warren over the last three years.”

The girls had a strong first game, dominating the East Dubuque Warriors with the score of 53-38. “For our first game, we played strong, solid defense while giving many other players good scoring options on offense,” said Kristen Calvert.

Friday’s game was played against the scrappy Warren team.  “Playing on their home court was a challenge, but we overcame that during the game,” said junior Sydney Schuler. The final score of the game was 55-39.

Having two games played back-to-back in the following week made the week very eventful.  The first game was played against Orangeville, then the Pirates had a close game against Durand.

Durand is known for playing excessively hard and causing numerous fouls.  “We knew that they played super aggressive, so playing through everything and staying mentally focused was a main key we had to focus on during the game,” said Sydney Schuler. Being in the bonus quickly in the second half of the game, gave the Lady Pirates an advantage towards the end of the game when it started to get close.  The girls won 33-27 against the Durand Bulldogs.

Finally, the Galena girls game out of the tournament undefeated and are playing 21-0 at Warren.  Also, they made school history by being the Turkey Tournament Champions four times in a row.  “This tournament is a great start to an even better season,” said Kristen Calvert.
