The start to the 2017-2018 Galena High School Varsity boys basketball season has been less than spectacular. Five weeks into the season, the team is currently sitting with a record of 2-10.
So far they have grabbed wins against Fulton Unity and Potosi and taken hard loses against teams including Southwestern, Stockton, and a crushing overtime defeat at home against Shullsburg. Though the season has started slow, the boys are still pushing to become better everyday.
The five seniors that have returned for the Pirates consist of Barrett Bell, CJ Bauer, Mickey Lorento, Tyler Eilts, Martin Gasperik, and Eddie Wilhelm. Talented juniors complete the roster with Evan Kruse, Cody Allendorf, Tyler Moran, and Conor Einsweiler.
When discussing the season, Barrett Bell said, “We’re definitely not close to our final product, and we’ve had some good moments but we’re yet to put it together as a team.”
With the rest of the season consisting of more away games than home, the Pirates will be tested with a handful of rival matchups. Under the leadership of new head coach, Nate Bingham, the boys will fight bounce back and make noise in the conference.
Kruse stated, “Things will turn around as soon as things fall into place, which isn’t too far from happening.”
The Pirates will face off againist Forreston and River Ridge in the coming week.
