Stepping Up to the Plate

The Galena Pirates varsity baseball team slid into the season with a win over the Orangeville Broncos on Monday, March 25th. They won by a score of 8-0.

The game started off slow with no runs in the first two innings, but in the third inning, the Pirates pulled ahead. Ethan Hefel ‘22 scored followed by Evan Kruse ‘19, and then Brady Schemehorn ‘22. “After a long two innings of no scoring, it felt great to score the first run of the game,” said Hefel.

The highest scoring inning was the fifth with four runs. Hefel was the highest scorer with three total runs. Kruse was the next highest with two runs and Cody Allendorf ‘19, Henry Anderson ‘20, and Schemehorn each added one.

The Pirates had three team members pitching throughout the game. Kruse had 34 strikes out of 45 pitches. Hefel pitched 17 with 14 strikes and only had three balls, and Chris Simon ‘19 pitched six strikes out of six total pitches. “Our pitchers did a good job,” said Kade Timmerman ‘19. “It was a really good way to start the season.”

The team lost six players from last year but this year’s five seniors have stepped up to become leaders for the team. “I’m really looking forward to my senior season and hope to have a good year,” said Jordan Gornick ‘19. “Winning this game was a great start.”

The baseball team plays again on Thursday, March 28th at Pearl City and Monday, April 1st at Southwestern.
