First sight of the Pirates

Galena High School Girls Soccer played their first game of the season against the Oregon Hawks. The game was played at Oregon on March 26th. Both teams were ready to go and began at 4:30 p.m.

Oregon started with the ball and came out strong. Giving them a challenge, the Galena defense made them fight for their goal. The Hawks got their chance and took their shot on goal. Galena didn’t give up. Keeping their heads up the Pirates took the ball down the field, getting past the defense. Junior McKenna Curren passed the ball creating a beautiful assist to sophomore Olivia Shafer. Shafer crashed and got the first goal of the season.

The Pirates put up a fight against the Hawks. With Oregon having three games under their belt, they were ready and played hard, scoring four goals in the first half. The Galena girls knew they had to work harder. Curren definitely gave it her all, she had six shot and four shots on goal. Even though she did not get a goal the coaches knew she put her all in this game. Coach Rijpma stated, “She played really well. She was able to take the game to the opponent’s half and be a real threat in front of their goal. She created nearly all of our scoring opportunities and provided the assist for Olivia.”

The next time the Pirates will play will be Friday, March 29 at 4:30 p.m. at home. They will be versing South Beloit. Come down to support the soccer team!
