Success at state

On Friday, April 26, three of the Galena Journalism team members went down to Heartland Community College to participate in the State competition.

Shea Curran ‘19, Sophia Getz ‘20, and Maggie Handfelt ’21, all competed in events against twenty other participants for a chance to place at state. The top six of each category are recognized and then given medals. Out of the three girls, Curran was the only one to place top six.

Although Curran was not originally attending State, she was the next in line when someone in her category was unable to attend. Curran said, “I was really excited when I was asked to fill a spot after someone wasn’t able to attend and I answered immediately knowing I wanted to have the experience.”

She competed in yearbook caption writing. When asked about the experience, Curran said, “I went into it assuming that I wouldn’t do very well, and I was just going to try my best, but I ended up doing really well. I’m proud of myself for doing so well and I’m really glad that I got the chance to go.”

Being a senior, Curran is excited to end her journalism career at a high. The journalism team is proud to be represented by three great teammates, and hopes for an even better season next year.
