Pirate Competitor of the Week – Also Nominated

Sophomore basketball player Julia Townsend has helped the JV Pirates rack up a 6-2 record, leading the team in scoring with 9 points per game.  She is also averaging 4 rebounds and 3 steals per game.  Coach Joe Engle praised her effort, saying “Julia is a great athlete who gives her all in practices and games! She is a natural leader which makes her a great kid to coach and a great teammate.”

Senior basketball player Sam Hesselbacher helped lead the Pirates to a four wins last week! Sam had outstanding efforts in wins vs. Milledgeville (9 points, 10 rebounds, 8 assist, and 3 steals), two wins vs. Warren (combined 16 points, 8 rebounds), and a win vs. Polo (12 points, 4 rebounds).  Coach Matt Wienen said, “Sam is one of the most versatile players I have ever coached. He can play all 5 positions on the floor. He plays the guard position and we can also play him in the post. I have really enjoyed watching Sam grow and become a complete player in our program. I’ve always known that Sam could score a lot of points but this year he’s become one of our better rebounders and passers. He made himself into a complete player this year! So happy the work he put in the off-season is paying off!”

Sophomore basketball player Jacob Furlong is averaging 10 points per game for the JV Pirates. According to coach Kevin Knautz, “Jacob does all the little things to make the team better. He is a strong rebounder and solid defender. Jacob has a strong work ethic everyday at practice.”

7th grader Roman Romer had 10 points in last week’s win over Warren and played great defense. Coach Matt Schumacher offered, “he has great athleticism for a big man and is playing a huge part for the 7th grade’s success so far.”

8th grader Parker Studtmann had 8 points in the Pirates win against Warren last week. Coach Dalton Montgomery nominated him, saying “he’s a great leader for our team on and off the court and always gives 100%.”

Freshman Taylor Burcham averaged 10.3 points (including shooting 50% from 3), 4 rebounds, and 3 rebounds in the varsity Pirates’ three wins last week.  Coach Jamie Watson celebrated her effort, “Taylor has had the best week of her young career this past week.  She’s stepped up and made big shots when needed.  The game she played vs RR/SM Thursday night was her best yet.  She had a game high 17 points with 4 threes.  She has been one of our best defenders this year and consistently draws the assignment of guarding the other team’s best player.  We are only seeing the tip of the iceberg with Taylor and she has an extremely bright future with our program.”
