Pirate Competitor of the Week

December 6, 2021

Senior basketball player Ethan Hefel is this week’s Pirate Competitor of the Week sponsored by Galena Culver’s and the Galena Gazette.  Last week Ethan averaged 24 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 steals per game leading the Pirates to victories in all three games.  Coach Matt Wienen praised the effort, “Ethan is a 4 year varsity starter who is the leader of the program this year.  Ethan and his teammates have started the season playing very well and their effort has gotten us to a 3-0 start to the season. Ethan is a player that I can rely on to do a lot of different things for our team. His biggest attribute is his leadership. He holds himself to the highest of standards and makes sure his teammates do the same.  His shooting to start the season has been very good and his effort has been outstanding!”  Ethan was honored with a gift basket from the Galena Culver’s, as well as a newspaper courtesy of the Galena Gazette.

Also Nominated:
Sophomore Connor Glasgow has averaged 17 points and 16 rebounds per game helping the varsity team to a 3-0 start to the season. According to coach Matt Wienen, “Connor is the most versatile player I’ve ever coached. He can play on the post, can drive, shoot the 3, guard any position on the floor. He and his teammates have gotten off to a good start to start the season. I can’t wait to see how he grows throughout the rest of his basketball career because his best basketball is yet to come. Which is scary because he’s only a sophomore.”

Freshman Parker Studtmann averaged 19 points per game last week. His efforts helped the JV basketball team to a 2-1 record. Coach Matt Wienen offered, “Parker is an outstanding athlete. He’s got heart, grit, he’s tough and isn’t scared of the big moment. He’s been working extremely hard throughout practices and I can tell it’s paying off in a big way! He’s got a bright future as a pirate basketball player!”

Freshman Gracie Furlong averaged 7 points, 8 rebounds & 5 steals in three games last week, helping the varsity Pirates to 2 wins, including a big road victory over Eastland on Thursday.  According to coach Jamie Watson, “Gracie has really emerged as a lockdown defender early on this season.  She plays great defense on the ball and off.  She is relentless on the boards and has been our leading rebounder so far this season.  Gracie can really do it all on the basketball court and she has been a huge addition to our team.”
