The last time the Cubs won the World Series the Titanic had not even began construction, there were only 46 states and there was no NBA, NFL or NHL. At least there was sliced bread, right? Nope! It did not come along until 20 years later, and the inventor of the internet? He hadn’t even been born. A lot has happened in 108 years, but a certainty now is that the drought is over. The Chicago Cubs are the 2016 World Series Champions.

This milestone was not only exciting for all of the players and staff, but also for the fans who witnessed the success. Out of GHS, 73 percent identify themselves as Cubs fans.

“I thought it was amazing that the Cubs won the World Series after 108 years of losing,” said sophomore super-fan Kris Knautz.

The average student can name 11 athletes on the roster, unlike Knautz who listed the first and last names of 26 different players. Of those surveyed, many were only able to list last names. The most popular was Rizzo, being named by 78 percent of students.

“Theo built the team with young talent and high character – guys who continue to work hard and will be title contenders for a long time, not just a one hit wonder,” said Mr. Freed.

Many Cubs fans have been waiting several years, and some decades, for this moment. The news was blowing up with 80+ year old fans who got to see the Cubs win for the first time.

“I was very happy, because it’s been a long time, and I was happy for all the old people who finally got to see them win,” said Sara Benson.

One fan who caught the multiple media’s attention, including WGN, was 90-year-old Dorothy Farrell, who has had first row seats at Wrigley Field since 1984. Dorothy has lost four brothers and her father who were all dedicated fans that never got to witness their Cubbies win a World Series.

Hopefully this will not be a “once in a lifetime” opportunity for Chicago Cubs fans everywhere, as they are expected to be in the running for the title for quite some time, but what is for sure is that Cubs fans will never forget the moment their team became the 2016 World Series Champions.
