The Galena Varsity Volleyball team conquered their first round of the Class 2A Regionals at West Carroll Middle School. Galena is seeded first in the regional. The regional consists of five teams including Galena, Morrison, Fulton, West Carroll and Prophetstown. “I was really happy with our regional placement,” said Mackenzie Muehleip ‘20, I feel like we can dominate the court at West Carroll just like we did last year on our home court.” West Carroll and Morrison played Monday night to move on to the semifinals. The Pirates played the winner of that game, West Carroll on their home court.

After an injury at the last regular season game at Warren last week, the Pirates were in need of a lineup change. Just days before regionals, this gave the team a scare. With hard work at practice, the girls knew they had to let it go and that they would be okay. Freshman Maggie Furlong and Sophomore Abby Soppe stepped up and filled the position of Sophia Heisler, who is out with a broken ankle.

The Pirates won their first game 25 to 18 and the next game 25 to 16. Morgan Wills ‘19 led the Pirates with 9 kills. Samantha Stoffregen ‘19 led the team with digs totalling 23. The Lady Pirates prepare for the possibility of becoming 5 peat Regional champions. “We’ve been waiting for post season all year long and now it’s finally here and we are so ready” said Sami Wasmund ‘19.

After the Pirates were finished with their game, they stayed to scout their competition for the championship. “I feel pretty confident about playing Fulton, but I know we all need to stay focused,” said Drew Wasson ‘19.  Fulton played Prophetstown following the West Carroll and Galena game.

The Pirates will play the Fulton Steamers for the Regional Championship on Thursday, October 25 at West Carroll Middle School a 6pm.
