Junior Izzy Sommers races to the ball. The team won with a score of 7-1 which is a record high for the team. “We get better everyday at practice and I hope we do well this season!”

On Friday, March 29th, the Galena Girls Soccer Team had their first home game. The team took on the South Beloit Sobos and the Pirates came out on top. The final score of the game was 7-1. Winning by six goals is a new record for the team.

The Pirates were a little nervous coming into their second game of the season. “We were a little frazzled after losing our first game,” said senior Hanna Skiston. “We are still adjusting to new players on the field and were worried how the game against South Beloit would go since we only won by one goal the previous year, but every year is different.”

The Pirates came into the game ready because the team quickly dominated the field. Within the first 20 minutes, the Pirates already had a 4-0 lead. “We were just really in sync right from the kick off,” said senior Elena Garcia. “It was our first home game and we were all excited which I think added to our extra determination to get the dub.”

By the time the first half drew to a close, the Pirates were up five to nothing. Instead of the team constantly attacking the goal, the Pirates started to focus more on their possession. “We knew that this upcoming week we would be playing tougher teams,” said sophomore Maggie Handfelt. “South Beloit allowed us to polish our skills to be ready to face our tougher competitors.”

McKenna Curran ‘20 really showed her stuff during this game. She scored six out of the seven goals against South Beloit. This is also a record for the most goals scored by an individual player in a single game. She had a total of 11 shots on goal and one assist as well. “I’m really happy that we won that game,” said Curran. “It gave our team the confidence that we are a force to be reckoned with.”

The team’s record so far is 1-1. They will next play on Tuesday at Prairie du Chien against the Blackhawks.
