First Game Jitters. The softball team huddles in the infield to calm the nerves of the first game. Coach Matt Schumacher gives the girls a pep talk to finish the inning strong.

The Galena Varsity Softball Team has started their new season with a total of 17 girls out for the year. They have played two games, both against the Pearl City Lady Wolves, and have suffered hard losses both games. Although the Pirates have had a rough start to the season, the players and their head coach, Dusty Berning, have big expectations and high hopes for how the season will play out.

The team has been working very hard and are excited to see what their hard work will achieve this season. Coach Berning talked about his expectations for this year by saying, “I knew going into the season that we were going to be young and had to replace five starters. I was realistic knowing that we wouldn’t win conference this year, but that we could improve every game and come out next season as the conference favorites”.

Coach Berning also talked about how much he was looking forward to the season saying, “I was very excited for this season because we have a lot of talent and it will be fun to see them develop as softball players over the season”.

Many of the girls on the team have taken note to this and have been working really hard to show their great skills.
The softball team is very young this season, having six freshman and two sophomores. Having such a young team gives more room for improvement. With the young team Coach Berning has many expectations for the season this year. He said, “You can expect the team to make mistakes, but then learn from those mistakes and to get better every game”.

The Galena Varsity Softball Team plays next on April 4 against the Stockton-Warren Warhawks. They will be ready to show up and show off.
