Last Saturday, the Galena Pirates football team played their first game against EPC at Freeport. The Pirates walked away with a 28-6 win. Being projected to lose, the Pirates proved many wrong. “Going into the game I had a lot of confidence and I felt like everyone on the team was excited to get back at it. Obviously there was a lot of doubt as the last few years didn’t play out the way we wanted, but we were ready to show what we can do. The win over EPC was a huge confidence booster for the rest of the season especially since we were projected to lose. As for the rest of the season I’m just excited to enjoy every practice and game with my brothers and hopefully have more success in the future” said senior player Will Nack.

Senior player Peyton Bauer played a great game and not only won a game, but also won the Telegraph Herald Athlete of the Week. “It’s an amazing feeling because the football team hasn’t won their first game in a long time so it’s nice to finally start off on the right foot. One thing that stood out to me was that we played as a team and I haven’t seen that in a long time, everyone supports and plays together. Winning athlete of the week was an amazing feeling because not only do I believe I won it, but we won it as a team, I put in just as much work as they did so we all deserve the recognition. I’ve never been so proud of a team in a long time and we’re just starting” said Bauer.

The Pirates play again on Saturday. They play a “home” game at Southwestern against West Carroll at 10 a.m.
