Volleyball girls competed in Peosta, Iowa Community center on January 30th. Athletas won every match that Sunday and are proud of their accomplishments. “Winning our tournament was a great sense of achievement especially after coming off of such an amazing school season. Club Volleyball keeps us in shape for the fall school season,” said Julia Townsend ‘23. Girls have four tournaments left before the end of their season.

Aside from school sports, many GHS students compete in other after school sports to help prepare themselves for upcoming school season and stay active during the off season. During the months of November through February girls and boys have been heavily invested in school basketball.

Along with basketball, many GHS volleyball players compete in a club team to prepare themselves for their upcoming season in the fall. “My AAU season has a very different play than my school season,” said Addison Hefel ‘24. “Playing with girls from different areas is a big change but it gets me more prepared for the school season. I always enjoy my club team because I get to travel all over the country and meet new people! We start practice in April and practice twice a week and tournaments go on throughout the summer.”

Many basketball players are involved in a traveling basketball team that typically starts in March, after their current basketball season. “Club basketball prepares me for school by keeping me prepared year round,” said Kaden Hauber ‘25. “I get to meet a lot of new people and experience things that I don’t get to here in school! AAU peaked my interest because I knew I wanted to get better and improve my game. I practice daily on my own but typically practice once a week on my club team. This year I am traveling to Georgia, Texas, Ohio, Wisconsin, Indiana, Nebraska starting in April.”

Additionally many GHS girls are currently competing in club volleyball. Some athletes include Julia Townsend ‘23, Maia Kropp ‘23, Danielle Stephanopoulos ‘23, Taylor Hilby ‘23, Samantha Callahan ‘23 and Gracie Furlong ‘25. Girls take time after school practicing for their upcoming tournaments in hopes of winning it all.

“Club volleyball peaked my interest when I was younger because of my love for the sport and the opportunity to hangout with my friends,” said Kropp. “Club prepares me for the school season because I am able to get extra touches and practice with some of my teammates. Different experiences at larger tournaments prepares me since there are harder teams that we have to compete against.”

Athletes are eager to compete in their upcoming club sports because of the opportunities and ability to improve during their off season. “My club season prepares me for school because it opens me up to many other teams and they all have different competitive levels,” said Hilby. “I enjoy playing club because we play around six games compared to school when we only play one,” said Hilby ‘23.

As school basketball comes to an end and club sports begin students are eager to improve their game, travel, and prepare for their following school season. Club volleyball comes to an end in April and club basketball starts up in March
