Galena Boys Basketball played Scales Mound in their annual Turkey Tournament on November 27th. Galena won by a score of 57 to 54. The game was tough, yet many exceptional players and great teamwork helped the Pirates secure the win.
Ending the first quarter the Pirates were up 16 to 11. The Pirates put a strong foot through the door and proved to Scales Mound how we would carry out the game. Braden Kevern ‘25 worked hard the whole game and secured himself the title of Top Scorer. “We started the game strong which gave us the momentum to finish just as strong,” he said.
Heading into the locker room at halftime the Pirates were in the lead with a score of 29 to 22. Owen Hefel ‘26 scored a three in the second quarter and Junior Owen Hefel had three three-pointers. He had more threes than he did any other points. Some may say Hefel even appears a natural at three-pointers.”Owen doesn’t miss, plain and simple, he puts in the work and it shows,” said superfan Mason Smith ‘26. When asked about his natural ability Owen Hefel ‘26 said, “I spend a lot of extra time perfecting my threes for these moments. I’ve been making buckets since birth.”
In the third quarter, The Hornets took the lead and ended the quarter with a score of 42 to 41. During the third quarter, junior Sam Amaya found himself in deep foul trouble. He had three fouls by the end of the third quarter. Amaya was faced with the task of turning it around and staying in the game. However, Myles Schumacher ‘25 was on a scoring streak. Schumacher scored 6 points in the first half to then went on to score 11 more leaving him at 17 points total “It was nice to come back up in the end and remain dominant,” he said.
The game ended with a half-court buzzer beater by Hefel to bring the final score 57 to 54. The crowd erupted, watching junior Hefel turn the game around last second. This win put them at 2-0 in the tournament and left them facing the Dakota Indians on November 30. Overall the low-scoring game turned out to be one that will be remembered for years to come. With many remarkable plays and great talent from the boys, Galena has a promising season ahead of them.
