The Galena High School girls’ golf team had a very successful fall season, qualifying for regionals. They not only improved all season long but also demonstrated work ethic as a unit, with a blend of returning players and new talent.
Under the guidance of their coaches and older team members, these girls spent hours at practice. Every tournament brought new challenges, including punishing courses and bad weather, but the team’s improvement and resilience were strong as it worked to post lower numbers. Coach Hahn says, “The team’s growth is awesome, we brought in 4 junior 3 of which started varsity at one point last year.”
One of the highlights of the season was the team’s trip to regionals. For many of the players, it was their first experience playing on such a high stage, and it will provide them with some invaluable experience leading into next year. “Regionals were really fun with great competition.” Layla Schemehorn exclaimed.
Off the course, the girls’ golf team grew close this year, becoming a community. Practices frequently turned into times of laughter and friendship, with the players rallying around each other through good rounds and tough ones. That feeling of togetherness and camaraderie was one of the chief reasons for their success. Ella Dodds claims, “My favorite golf memory was Layla’s birthday, and on the bus we got to eat cookie cake.
As the season ends, the players reflect on how far they’ve come and what they’ve learned not just about golf but about themselves: Patience, focus, and perseverance. It was quite a final season for the seniors. For first-year students, however, it’s extra fuel to improve and come back better next year.
The 2025 girls’ golf campaign will follow new objectives, including advancing further in postseason play and possibly even winning regionals, given how close they were this year. What kind of success and failure new players will bring, only the next season can tell, but one thing is for sure: this year’s squad has set a high standard for what hard work and dedication can bring.
