As the Friday night lights fade and the season comes to an end, the Galena High School football seniors are taking in their final moments as Pirates. For this group of upperclassmen, football has been more than just a sport; it’s been a part of their lives since freshman year, filled with memories, friendships, and plenty of hard work.
The seniors led the team through every high and low this season, setting an example for the younger players with their determination and drive. They showed up early, stayed late, and gave everything they had on the field.
Each senior brought something unique to the team, whether it was leadership, humor, or the ability to motivate others. Mason shared that his favorite memory was from his junior year when the team traveled to LeRoy and stayed overnight in a hotel with his friends, calling it one of those moments he’ll never forget. Gus said that being part of Galena football “means making memories with friends that last forever,” a feeling shared by most of the seniors who’ve been together for years. Owen admitted that the most challenging part of saying goodbye is “not being able to play with my buddies like Paul Sheets,” capturing the deep bond this group formed through the sport.
This year’s seniors helped build a strong foundation for the future of Galena football. Their work ethic and energy pushed everyone to do better, and the younger players took notice. Jack said the seniors inspired him “to work hard and become a better player and person.” Colten McCartney shared that “the seniors set the standard for us juniors and prepared us for next year,” while Gael Cabanas added that they “taught him how to become a better teammate, role model, and person overall.”
Beyond the games and practices, the seniors created memories and friendships that will last long after high school. “I’ve made a lot of great friends this year, like Eli Studman. Eli’s an absolute beast on the field, and I always trusted him to have my back on defense.” Travis Temperley, As they prepared to move on, senior Roman offered advice to next year’s team: “Good luck, and always work hard. Be the best you can be.”
While their final season has come to a close, the impact of this senior class will carry on. They’ve shown what it means to play for each other, to compete with heart, and to leave everything on the field. As the lights go out on their high school football careers, the seniors of Galena High walk away proud—knowing they’ve left their mark on the program and on each other.
